Heber City
Life without hearing the sounds of the nearby railroad running all year would be unconscionable for the people of Heber City, Utah. But that very nearly happened. The Heber Valley Railroad began as a branch line to Provo, Utah, for the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1899. The most significant commodities shipped on the branch were livestock, lumber, sugarbeets, and building materials. Besides a rail line realignment due to the construction of Deer Creek Reservoir, the branch line remained stable until the mid-1950s. The Denver & Rio Grande Western abandoned the rail line, and after the state road commission tried to turn the rail line into another highway, a new tourist railroad was established in the 1970s. Today, the Heber Valley Railroad, owned by Utah, is the only tourist railroad in the state.
