Virginia City & Carson City

Virginia City and Carson City in Nevada are tied to the Comstock Mines and the mid-19th century boom. Silver discovery in 1859 led to the completion of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in 1869, connecting these towns and making it a profitable short-line railroad that transported valuable ore worth millions of dollars. However, its success waned in the early 20th century due to declining mining and truck transport, leading to the V&T's closure in 1950. Parts of the V&T were later restored as a heritage railroad, now offering tourist rides and preserving its history.

Much of the Virginia and Truckee's equipment has been preserved over the years. A majority of it is now housed at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The reopened Virginia and Truckee Railroad in Virginia City also has a few pieces of original V&T equipment, including the Reno steam locomotive.
